Vintage Lace Dresses

Lace up
Vintage finds are so cool because not only are they genuinely from another time period, but they’re also stylish now. For those who want to follow the trends but still be original, vintage is the way to go. Just like history repeats itself, fashion repeats itself. So something that was popular in the seventies may be coming back into style now. Instead of emulating a look with millions of other ladies wearing the same exact thing, why not go straight to the source and buy vintage?

Lace is timeless and has always been fashionable. Lace is popular amongst wedding dresses but you’ll also find lace in casual wear as well. Vintage lace dresses are an amazing find because you’ll wear something that no one else may have and still look adorable. So next time you wear a lacey dress and someone asked where you got it you can smile and say “it’s vintage”.

Warnings when shopping vintage
Buying a used dress is like shopping for a used car, you want to make sure you’re actually getting a good deal with it in good condition. So when you’re shopping for vintage Lace dresses, thoroughly check the dress before you head to the cash register. You want to make sure that there are no rips, tears, or holes in the dress, if there are consider if you’d be able to easily sew it up and if you can bring it to the attention of the sales clerk and ask for a discount. If not, leave it on the rack. Also check for any odors, if something smells gross, put it back because you don’t want to be that girl who buys smelly used clothes. Lastly check for stains, it may not come out if it’s been there twenty years. When shopping online read the description as the sellers often have disclaimers about the quality of the product. They’ll also list the measurements so make sure to measure yourself first and make sure that it’ll fit, returns would be too much of a hassle. Oh and remember that sizing has fluxed with the times, you may be a size 2 in modern times but a size large vintage, and some dresses may not even have a label on them. Resist your natural inclination to check for the designer and size and instead just try on the gown and see if you like it.

Where to find  used Vintage Lace dresses
If it’s meant to be yours, you’ll find it. On a recent trip to Austin, Texas I stumbled upon a cute little vintage store. Inside I found the most beautiful pink lace dress. It’s from the nineties and I swear it’s meant for me. It’s only lace with no underlay, has a pink floral lace print, and white buttons going all the way down the front of the gown which hits just above the knee. It’s tight fitting at the bodice with subtle shoulder pads at the short sleeves and then flows out at the skirt. And the best part was the price, only twenty dollars! You may be wondering how to style a see-through dress. Obviously you need something under it. I wore it to the pool as a bathing suit cover up. You can also style it with a bandeau or bralette and a bandage or pencil skirt underneath. Or if you have a tight body con dress in a solid color that would work well too, every time you wear the lace dress you can wear something different underneath for a whole new look! So definitely check out vintage stores especially when you’re traveling, you never know what you’ll find! Also check out online stores such as ETSY, where you can buy vintage clothes in addition to handmade goods. They have a nice selection of vintage lace frocks; I’ll show you some of the best ones.

The History of American Dresses

‘I have nothing to wear!’?

So you have a closet full of dresses you bought at the store, it wasn’t always that way for Americans. Literally, in the seventeenth century there were no closets and clothes were kept in chests instead. When American colonists came to the new world and cut ties with England, they also weren’t really able to buy English clothing anymore and a lot of people only had what they brought over on the ship. Can you imagine coming to a country just starting out and there are no clothing stores? The first department stores didn’t come to Americans until the eighteen fifties. In colonial America women’s dresses went to her ankles. There’s a lot in fashion that we take for granted: certain dress styles, the luxury of shopping, bras, innovative fabrics, and even magazines. It wasn’t always this easy to put on your favorite stylish dress in the morning, not too long ago the fashion gifts we’re used to ceased to exist. Read on for a quick history of American dresses and see just how great we have it.

Sew what?

In the late seventeen hundreds, French woman Josephine Bonaparte, Napoleon’s wife, made Empire Style dresses popular in the Americas and the high waist style stayed popular until the nineteenth century. Women wore layers of these high waist skirts.

In Victorian America women’s dresses started serving a purpose besides looking pretty, dresses allowed women to perform activities such as cycling. Young girls wore solid colored, plain dresses. In the 1840s when women started dressing more lavishly, people worried that they were becoming too materialistic with their extravagant dressing. If only they could see how materialistic women are nowadays. In 1870 Abba Gould Woolson lead the movement from custom made clothing to ready-to-wear clothing. Perhaps we have her to thank for not having to sew all our clothes ourselves. And people used to sew without patterns! Paper patterns which layout the pieces of fabric needed to create a garment weren’t introduced until the 1870s. So before patterns and before ready-to-wear you had to be the fashion designer and come up with the dress you wanted completely on your own.

Ride down memory lane.

In the early twentieth century corsets were replaced by ‘breast-supporters’, a predecessor of the bra. The bra as we know it didn’t really start to form until the nineteen twenties. Can you imagine how uncomfortable it would be to wear a tight corset under your dress? When you think of Goodyear you think of tires, but Charles Goodyear who first came up with a way for rubber to withstand stretching and heat also revolutionized fashion because this process was good for not only tires, but also paved the way for comfortable elastic fabrics.

Be the girl who goes to Paris.

Fashion magazines are a way to see what’s trendy in Women’s dresses. Paris was put down in history as a fashion capital when a Paris fashion magazine, Godley’s Ladies Book showcased Paris fashion trends in 1830. Harper’s Bazar was published showcasing Paris fashion and lifestyle for the world to see in 1867. Before these magazines you couldn’t just open a periodical to see trends overseas, you’d have to actually take a boat to see what’s fashionable in France.

Be classy, not sassy.

Flapper dresses became popular in the roaring twenties and women dressed more freely and showed more skin. The Academy Awards banned mini-skirts from the red carpet in 1967 because they weren’t elegant enough. What does this tell us? When it comes to your dress, it’s best to leave something to the imagination.

You have something to wear.

You may not have the latest trendy dress, but you definitely can find something in your closet to wear today. American dresses fashion has come a long way, we are now able to start our own trends and not only take cues from Europe. New York is now the fashion capital of the world, not Paris. We have magazines that aren’t just imported, but that we send out with street style in the states. American dresses no longer have to be custom made, but they can be mass manufactured. There’s more freedom when deciding what to wear, you can wear a long dress, a short dress, pretty much any style of dress you’d like and you no longer have to wear what’s socially acceptable. Feel empowered when you get dressed in the morning because now the way American’s dress expresses who they are as an individual and no longer has to conform to society as a whole. So next time you think you have nothing in your closet to wear, think of everything Americans have gone through to get to this privileged position in passion and select a gown with pride.

While now teens tend to go for comfort more often than not, a cute dress at school or the mall is a fabulous way to feel cute and confident. And it doesn’t have to feel too dressy! Incorporating more casual pieces to your look like: a belt, boots or jacket can make it feel more relaxed. Check out this dress from dELiA*s. Its floral print is really feminine and perfect for spring, but the jean jacket styled with it toughens it up and makes it look less formal. The jacket also makes your teen frock seem more grown up.

A neutral colored jacket goes best with a patterned or printed dress. If the jacket makes a statement all on its own like this beautiful lavender/rose number from Arden B. then pair it with a simple frock, like this angelic ivory garb also from DELiA*s.

Belts are not just for jeans! Wide belts like the ones shown can be buckled over a dress that could use an extra cinch. Like this adorable sleeveless floral dress which can be found at Rue 21 stores. Ruffles are great for more petite girls to give them the illusion of curves. However too much fabric and a girl could get lost! The belt is a cute touch and also accentuates the model’s smallest area.

Peek-A-Boo Lace Dress

If you want a sneak peak at what’s to come in spring fashion, you don’t have to go to Fashion Week in the fall to find out. Instead, go to somewhere where it’s warmer than where you live and check out what people on the street are wearing! In Austin Texas, trendy Texans were sporting cowgirl boots and asymmetrical dresses. Also known as hi-low dresses they’re shorter in the front and longer in the back. Kind of like a mullet, but fashionable and totally in style, honest. Paired with cowgirl boots it looks really trendy! Try it out with this hi-low dress from DELiA*s and check out Country Outfitter’s website for a genuine look.

Peplums are very in right now. The style is tight almost like a corset on top, then it flairs with extra fabric around the waist and then the bottoms like a pencil skirt again. It’s a nice breath of fresh air after the craze of skin tight dresses that were rampant last year. The peplum breaks up the look and earns you major style points. Check out this spring ready floral print peplum ensemble from Charlotte Ruse.

So those dresses are great and all, for casual occasions. But its spring, and all you high school juniors and seniors (and lucky underclassmen) are most likely searching for a very special dress… Your prom dress of course! So here’s the thing, you want to look amazing; you need a dress and a tie for your date to match. However, you definitely don’t want to be matching dresses with anyone else! If your classmates haven’t already thought of this, make a closed facebook group where girls call dibs on their prom dress to ensure no one wears the same one!

Just in case though, you can also use the internet for finding the perfect prom dress. Make sure you have plenty of time so you can send the dress back if it doesn’t work. Don’t rent a dress online as tempting as it may seem, because no one sees the tag or cares about the designer and what happens if it doesn’t fit or the zippers broken and you don’t have time to send it back for a replacement? Instead search for online exclusives that others who are hitting up your local mall won’t discover, like this hidden gem from Brass Plum (the junior’s section at Nordstrom).

And if you’re prom dress shopping now you can check out online exclusives like that pretty in pink number from Nordstrom. And don’t forget every teenager needs a little black dress in her closet for emergencies, no excuses! Until next time, live stylishly.

Add More Edge To Your Wardrobe With A Neo-Gothic Twist

You don’t have to be a full-blown goth to incorporate gothic elements into your wardrobe. A slight goth-inspired twist can add a little extra edge to your everyday outfits. The latest neo-gothic trend isn’t about teenage angst, but rather draws on fashion elements inspired by more traditional notions of gothicism and the noir. What does this really mean? It means the modern gothic look doesn’t involve the stereo-typical heavy black eyeliner, pale white makeup, and mandatory punk accents. Instead, the neo-gothic look aims for a sort of vampirish femininity. Traditional gothic female archetypes incorporate both the virginal maiden and the dark, evil queen – your look can draw from either of these themes to create your goth-inspired look, or even draw from a little bit of both.

Basic Outfit Idea

Here’s a basic outfit idea that utilizes simple black pieces, a little lace for texture, and silver jewelry. This is just one starter idea to get your creative juices flowing, and it might not be appropriate for everyone. It’s important to experiment with different combinations, materials, textures and patterns to find what works for you and your body type.

Black Lace Top

A key part of pulling off the neo-gothic look  is embracing texture. One of the simplest and most effective ways to liven up the black gothic look is to use lace.  Below are a few lace tops you can use in your neo-gothic outfit.

Silver or Faded Gold Jewelry

Silver jewelry works well to give your black outfit that extra neo-gothic flair. Try to avoid bright gold jewelry, though gold jewelry that’s slightly faded can work well when paired with silver. Try mixing together silver and faded gold chains over a black v-neck or scoop neck blouse.

Skirt or Pants

Faux Leather Panel Skirt

Leather always works well when you’re going for the neo-gothic inspired look.

Basic Denim Skinny Jeans

If you forego the skirt, you can easily pull together this outfit with a pair of basic black skinny jeans. Here is a nice pair from Forever 21, or you can borrow something from your existing wardrobe.

Black Boots

To complete your goth inspired outfit, throw on a pair of tall black boots. While they don’t necessarily have to be high heeled, they should definitely cover most of your calf. Black is ideal, but you can also try some darker shades of red, brown, gray, or purple if you want to add a bit of color to your outfit. Avoid platforms, since they tend to scream “teenage rebellion punk goth” when paired with an all-black outfit.

Additional Tips

Here are some additional tips for putting together your neo-gothic outfits.

  • Since your outfit is lacking in color, make sure it makes up for it with rich texture.  Some textures to try include fur, lace, velvet, brocade, and embroidery.
  • Embellishments can do a lot for a pitch black outfit
  • Use sheer layers on top of heavier textures to create a gorgeous contrast.
  • If you’re wearing black leather, make sure it hugs your figure.
  • To really pull off an all-black look, make sure your makeup and hair fits with the rest of your look. This will probably require some experimentation in front of the mirror.

The neo-gothic look can be very easy to over-do – pulling off the goth look can be difficult once you’re out of your teens. Instead of trying to jump into all-black at once, start experimenting with your wardrobe staples one at a time. Once you have that figured out, then you can move onto experimenting with accessories like eye-catching handbags, jewelry or a pair of sunglasses. It’s better to slowly add new goth elements into your outfits until you get a feel for what works and what you can get away with.

While this look might be difficult to pull off, when done right, you’ll have a mysterious, fashion-forward style that you’re sure to love.

3 Ways to Brighten your Winter with a Lace Dress

How to Brighten up your Winter

Every year we are faced with the dry coldness that is Winter. I for one am not a huge fan being more a Summer girl myself. However it does give us some awesome opportunities to try a different look, mix it up a bit. And you also get to wear more layers which means more to choose from!

Bright winter fashion

So I give you 3 ways in which you can use to brighten up your Winter. Stand out in the crowd with fabulous contrasts in color and flair!

Get Sparkly

Winters are always very dry and so, sparkle is definitely in fashion this season. However, when buying a dress, just make sure it is done right. If sparkle is done right, it looks classy and chic but when it’s done wrong it looks downright tacky and cheap. So, BE CAREFUL! There should be just enough sparkle to give a glamorous edge to your dress.

Halter Top Prom Dress With Sparkly Ruched Bodice

Sequins, applique flowers and crystal brooches are all “in”. However, these should only be a small point of detail on your dress. Sparkle on the bust, neckline or bodice looks really chic and gorgeous.

Diamond Fantasy®/MD cubic zirconia 10K Gold 3.5mm Stud Earring

Other than the adornments on your dress, your accessories should also be sparkly that brings attention to you and make you stand out from the rest. Get clutches and heels with sparkly sequins, diamantes or crystals. Diamond jewelry definitely matches fabulously with lace and gives you that bling and sparkle you are after.

Brighten Up Your Look

Red Front Short Back Long Lace Elastic Woven Satin Prom Dress

If you want to wear bright colors but still look sexy in black, you might try brightening up it with different colors. Make them bright to create a contrast that will make everyone notice.

Paris Hilton Edie (Women's) - Red Patent/Red Satin

Wearing a lace overlay over a simple shift of a bright color. Red with black lace looks very chic and modish. While you can look sexy with lace on your skin, red will brighten up your overall look. Add a red handbag and red heels, you can have a really bright and glamorous look.

Sexy Yet Demure Lace Look

Going through all the winter collections by famous designers, it seems like demure is the new fashion this season. However, that doesn’t mean it’s all about stuffy dresses.

MOCHA BLACK SWEETHEART FLORAL LACE OVERLAY SEXY TUBE DRESS

One idea of a sexy yet demure design is to have colorful lace with nude lining. Although this lace dress suggests skin underneath, it doesn’t actually expose anything.

High necklines are also an important feature that we get to see in the latest winter collections. No more low V-necks that looks really desperate and inappropriate in the daytime. High necklines can look more sexy and gorgeous than low V-necks.

Go for dramatic, glamorous and demure looks this season with a well-designed, well-picked bright lace dress.
